All Choked Up

Two days ago, while sitting in front of the computer, I heard this frantic clicking of my doorbell, except it didn’t sound because I had remove the batteries. Still, I could hear the clicking sound. I thought it was some salesman but I looked through the peek-hole to check anyway and found my neighbour and her crying baby, Qi Qi. She was the little 妹妹 that 妹妹 likes to hug so much, remember?

I opened the door and let them in. It seems that the baby had choked on her food and poor mummy doesn’t know what to do. I tried to help using the method I learned from magazines to try clearing the blockage. I was expecting her to cough out a piece of fish (mommy told me she choked on fish) but nothing happened. And the poor baby was still crying, choking and coughing and it still sounded muffled. I asked if she would want to bring her baby to the clinic for help. Lucky for me, 妹妹 was sleeping. So I asked 哥哥 to stay at home and went over to her house to help. I asked mommy to try to clear her blockage again. This time we could hear her clear cries. No more muffle sound. Guessed she must have swallowed it. Thank God!

The porridge was actually smooth without pieces of fish in it. It seems that the baby had somehow choked on a spoonful of fish porridge while playing. What an experience for me! I always tell 哥哥, don’t play and talk while you are eating! Don’t be surprised that you might get choked on a piece of tofu. Accidents do happened.

Anyways, this is the illustration I got from BabyCenter. This is where I learn first-aid for choking.

Dislodge the blockage

Sit on a chair with the baby face down on your lap. Let her upper body hang down over your knees, and support her face and neck with one hand. Use the heel of your other hand to gently but firmly thump the child four times in the middle of her back, between the shoulder blades. Don't use as much force as you would to help an adult, but do remember that you're trying to dislodge the object blocking the baby's airway.
