Paper Fan

As a child, we didn't have the luxury of having many fans at home. One fan serves the whole family and the only place to feel air-conditioning will be major shopping centers. When the weather was hot, my grand-parents and parents will use fan made from dried grass to fan me and my brother.

This craft was taught by my grand-father. We used recycled brown paper used for wrapping stuff then. He would twist the ends to make it easier for us to hold and fan.

Materials needed:

  • Hard Paper, preferably A3 size but I'm using A4 because my son complained that it's to big for him to draw.
  • Colour Medium, he used colour pencils.
  • Scotch Tape
How to do it:
  1. Draw on the piece of paper.
  2. After completion, fold the short end of the paper in zig-zag pattern of about 2cm wide.
  3. Hold on the end of the gathered paper.
  4. Tape it to secure.
  5. Gentle pull the open end to 'open' the fan.

Now, you can fan yourself on a hot day!

Tag: 5 Things I Complained

This is an overdue tag from BabyFiona. These are the stuff I constantly complain about ...

  1. Why do people rush to use the wide gate (in the MRT) when they can use the normal gate. That's meant for those who need, like those on wheel chair, carry luggage and those like me with a kid and a pram. Oh, or maybe you can't get through the normal gate with your size? *stick out tongue*
  2. Stand on the left-side people!!! That's your non-writing hand, unless your are right handed.
  3. Why do people rush to take the lift when they can use the escalator (in the MRT stations and Shopping Centers), leaving those who really need it waiting. Hey, I'm not asking you to take the stairs leh.
  4. People, move away after you get off the escalator lah. Don't just stand there. And if I crash on to you with my pram, (people are hogging the lift remember?), don't stared at me. I got no other way to go.

  5. And lastly, I want to get out of the train. Let me out first lah!

So, if you want to or have anything to complain, do this tag lah

Magic Card

I did this card during the June school holidays. I said I did it because this project need to 2 person to do it. A 'giver' and a 'receiver'. In this case, I was the one who gave the card. I was very mad with my son over some mischief he did but still I have to let him know I still love him a lot ...

Anyway, I drew balloons on the outside and it says ... "Mom ♡ You" inside.

Materials needed:

  • Paper
  • White crayon
  • Colouring pencils
How to do it:
  1. The 'giver' designs the card by writing and drawing on the card with white crayon.
  2. Press hard when you are writing to get the crayon imprint on the card.
  3. The 'receiver' colour all over the card to reveal what's on the card.
Note:
Of course, the receiver would be able to see the picture/words written but it's fun to see it appearing as he/she colours it

I loved my Guitar

I'm so in love with the Classical Music played using the Classical Guitar!! This was the reason why I took it up - years ago. Watching this makes me want to bring out my Guitar in the store room, restring it and learn it all over again.

Letter to my son

Dear Son

You have been a very bad boy! Although I tried very hard not to say this but ... I'm very disappointed in your behaviour.

I gave up my job to care for you full time and now I felt I have wasted my years staying at home. I felt I have failed to teach you well. Maybe I should said I'm disappointed in myself for not being able to teach you better.

You used to lie because you were afraid to be punished. After some talks, you changed. You always admitted and own-up to things you did wrong and apologized for your behaviour. You were always forgiven because you were brave enough to admit your mistakes.

But today you lied again. What's worst was that you knowingly did something wrong and then planted the crime to your sister. I trusted you when you told me your sister did it and she was punished. You betrayed my trust. Then you did it again. You only admitted your wrong doings after much probing and you did not even apologize and now you even behaved as nothing had happened. I was shocked beyond words. I did not expect you to do such things. You are only 5! You made me worried.

You might be doing this to get my attention or you might think I love your sister more so you did things on behalf of your sister to annoy me so I could love her less. I love you both as much. If not more for you. Every time, we eat out, I let you choose what you want to eat and your sister will eat what you had choosen. When I want to get a gift for your sister, I'll make sure I get your gift first then let you decide what to get for your sister so you will not think you have a gift because I bought one for your sister and I had to buy one for you. When we go out during the weekends, it try to think of places that I think you will enjoy. You always get to use new stuff and your sister, things passed down from you. The time I spend with you is more than I spend with your sister. You knew all these.

I know you love your sister very much and she loves you too. We all love you. I hope you did what you did just out of pure mischief and it will not happen again. I do not hope that you will grow up to be someone great. What is the use of being a great man when you are scheming and sly? I just want my son to be a honest and trustworthy man.

Your heartbroken Mother

Who is WokkingMum?

I'm not sure if you noticed the cartoon I used on my MyBloglog.com, Technorati and some food sites. There is a reason why I used that. Well, some sort of reason lah. I think I look like it lor. *thick skin* hehehe ...

The story was someone send 爸爸 some cartoons quite some time back and 爸爸 said I look a lot like one of those cartoons and send me a copy. Hmm ... there is really some similarity, especially the mole below the left eye! LOL But of course the cartoon is a lot more prettier and cuter lah! I have used that as my avatar since then. What do you think?

If you do not know how I look like, well, I look like .....

Smiley Baby

While going through my old blog at Multiply, I saw the video clip I posted on 妹妹 who was 6 months old then. It never fail to put a smile on my face watching that clip. Since all the clips are set for viewing for people in my contact list, I thought I'll post that here to share with the rest. Hope it put a smile on your face too!

Afternote:
CutiePrincessMommy mentioned that she can't view the video. Hmmm ... PhotoBucket Video giving problem? ... I have embeded the clip using YouTube instead. Hope this works.

Wakey! Wakey!

Every time I carry 妹妹 out of her bed when she wakes up from her nap, she will go disturb 哥哥 next door, even if he is still sleeping. She will do all sorts of things to wake him up. Then they will play on 哥哥's bed for a while before going to the playroom.

Fun at the Fire Station

Joanne invited us to join her and her twins for a visit to the Bukit Batok Fire Station last Saturday.

The Fire Department in Singapore is know as Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). We don't get to see Fire-fighters in red anymore. They are all in dark blues! We saw a whole range of fire engines there. Like the Pumper-Ladder (PL) which I think is the commonly seen Fire Engine. There's the Combined Pumper-Ladder (CPL), which has a hydraulic ladder-platform attached to it, used to reached high rise fire. The kids had a chance to ride on it.

妹妹 cried through out the time her brother was on it. She must have thought he was leaving her. She stopped when her brother came back down to comfort her. Ai yo! Separation anxiety ah?! 妈妈 with you leh. Cannot also ah?

I think one of the favourite part for the kids was to be able to play with water! They could stopping 'playing' with the Water Mist Gun and the Water Hose! Giant Water Guns! They had two rounds with them! Wah! Lots of water wasted!

I'm not sure about the twins but all 哥哥 could remember was the water hose, the gun and the ride on the CPL. He did have fun but I couldn't say the same for 妹妹 who clung to me like a Koala most of the time. Maybe we will visit again when 妹妹 is older.

Hmm... Ahhh... Ohh ... Yah...

The hot was scorching hot so I squeezed 哥哥 with 妹妹 in the pram and I pushed them back home from school. Poor me walking under the sun, hot and sweaty! Throughout the 10-15 minutes journey, the girl was chatting away with her brother and I don't understand a single thing she was saying. All baby talk! The funny thing was there were laughter! Both of them laughing over something that I doubt 哥哥 understands too. 哥哥 told me this when we reached home, "You don't understand what 妹妹 is talking hor? I don't understand also. But she is very funny leh." LOL Now who is funny!

* The little chatterbox still 'talking' when we reach home. *

* Hmm ... you understand? Like this and like that lor *

I love shopping aka spending money

哥哥 went to Chinatown today as part of the holiday programme. Parents were told by the school to give their child $2 - $4 for them to buy things. So, I prepared $4 of 50c coins for him. My boy is going shopping! Hahaha ...

哥哥 bought 2 items. He bought that thingy, is it called a phone tinklet? He said he like that best. It's a shape of a bag and he paid $1 for it. That's two 50c, he said. Hmm... Very good! And the teachers bought them to a shop selling famous Egg tarts. (Hmm ... more like shopping for teachers leh.) He bought one too. He said it was $2. (It's actually $1.80 because I saw a 20c in the coin pouch. hehe.) Looks like he enjoyed shopping!

His teacher told me, she asked him to eat the egg tart he bought but he said it's meant for me. Wahhh! So sweet! I'm so touched! Sayang you!

After note:
I just checked the coin pouch and realised there were $2.20 left. So the egg tart can't be $1.80 but 80c. I checked with 哥哥 and he told me, he used $2.00 in total. Oh! Then I must have mistaken what he told me when he say $2. lah. I thought how come egg tart so expensive har. haha...

Reciting Chinese Poem

Today's holiday program is about Tang's Poem 唐诗 and Chinese calligraphy 书法. 哥哥 showed me what he wrote. Not bad for first timer. At least I knew what he wrote at one look. It's words from the 唐诗 - 咏鹅.

I remembered he learned this last year in school. Of course he can't remember how to recite when I asked him BUT I had a video of him reciting the poem. Got actions some more you know! Ai ya! It's soooo funny! I think after hearing him reciting his poem, the Poet sure flip in his grave!

咏鹅 诗人:骆宾王

鹅,鹅,鹅, 曲项向天歌。
白毛浮绿水,红掌拨清波。

Pop Art

We saw this craft on TV quite sometime back. It's looks fun for the kid but messy for the mommy. Definitely a craft that requires you to put on an apron or old clothes unless you want to decorate your shirt too!

Materials needed:
  • Glasses or cups
  • Washing detergent
  • Water
  • Straws
  • Paints, assorted colours
  • Paper

How to do it:

  1. Mix 1 part water with 3 parts washing detergent in a glass.
  2. Add in 4 parts paint to the above.
  3. Use a straw to stir it.
  4. Have your child blow OUT through the straw slowly to create bubbles.
  5. Press the paper on the glass to pop the bubbles.
  6. Remove the paper and you will see the pop marks.
  7. Have 2 or 3 colours to make is colourful.
  8. Makes a nice wrapping paper!
Note:
  • DO NOT use disposable cups because they are too light and might topple over when the child press the paper over it.
  • Try using different sizes of glass, cup or even bowl to have different effect.

* It's fun making bubbles! *

D for Dotty Flower

I told my daughter, we have doing dotting today. D for Dots and she said wooh-wooh! LOL That's DOG dear!

She couldn't stop wanting to paint with her fingers. I had to tell her a few times that it's dot-dot-dot. Of course, I did let the kids do their finger messing later but I added white paint to lighten the shades because they, especially the girl, will paint on the table and chair after she get tired of painting on paper.

Materials needed:

  • Cut out shape of a flower and leaf
  • Paints, assorted colours
  • Stick - disposable chopstick or ice cream stick
  • Scotch tape
How to do it:
  1. Dip finger into paint.
  2. Transfer to paper by dotting.
  3. Once completed, let it dry.
  4. Tape the chopstick to the back of the flower and leaf.
That's it!

* Having fun dotting away *

* Dotting became Finger Painting *

Err ... Dumplings anyone?

I send 哥哥 for a week's Chinese Holiday Program. In fact I actually wanted him to go for the Outdoor Activity Program. I think he will enjoy that better but he himself decided to attend this Chinese Program instead. I bet he regretted it. *snigger* Why? Because he doesn't understand what the teacher is talking about. He kept telling me "不知道" when I asked him what he did in school. The funniest part was he told me, "All Chinese! Why no English? 我不知道 what the teacher is talking about!" LOL Poor guy!

Anyway, he did enjoyed his session today. They get to do 饺子. He told me they did a dough, took some and roll it into a ball then flatten it; that's the skin. Wah! Okay ... (must have guess his way out of it! LOL) Now he wants to help me next time I do it since he knew how to do it. Hmm ... err .... have a look at what he did ...

* Did he do these? Neh, seems too perfect leh. *

* Err ... MUST be his masterpiece! LOL *
